EFA WA Welcomes a New CEO

On behalf of the EFAWA Branch Committee, EFA and SEC Staff I would like to welcome Hamish Johnston on board as the new CEO of the EFAWA. Hamish brings with him a wealth of knowledge in Sport and Event Management and High Performance consultancy. We wish Hamish all the best in this exciting role.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Cath Moss who has filled the role of CEO for the past 12 months. I am sure you will all still see Cath around the SEC grounds on a regular basis.

Hayley Lethlean

It is with great pleasure that I find myself back within the equestrian family. After many years pursuing sporting and career objectives throughout Australia, I return to WA in this exciting position within the EFA. Previously in my equestrian days I have been a competitor in eventing, having ridden at CIC*; course-designer in cross-country and ShowJumping; judged ShowJumping; coached riders; I think I even taught myself to plait! I look forward to working for you, to continue the great development of our sport within the community. Over the coming months I hope to re-acquaint past friendships and meet many more.

Hamish Johnston

The fourth Australian Youth Olympic Festival will be held 14-18 January 2009 and will have over 2000 athletes from across the world competing in a number of Summer Olympic sports.

The AYOF is organised by the Australian Olympic Committee. The main aim of the AYOF is to develop our Olympic stars of the future, and to provide aspiring Olympians an insight into what the Olympics are all about. The AYOF incorporates many aspects that athletes will experience in an Olympic Games - Opening and Closing ceremonies, medal presentations, athletes villages and drug testing.

For the second time, the AYOF will include Equestrian events in the disciplines of Dressage and Jumping. The competition will be held at the Sydney International Equestrian Centre.

The EFA is taking nominations for team members until 17 May 2008. Riders must be aged between 15 years and 20 years (born between 01 January, 1989 and 31 December, 1994).

The Jumping competition will be at a maximum height of 1.25m and the Dressage competition held at Medium level. The event is with borrowed horses. All riders who nominate are asked to supply two horses to be used in the competition; all horses will be put into a pool to be drawn out by the teams.

Riders who wish to be eligible for team selection or any owners who would like to provide a horse and be a part of this exciting event should submit an Expression of Interest.

This is a wonderful opportunity for an Olympic experience. In addition, the EFA will incorporate this event, the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore and the 2011 AYOF, in which Equestrian will also be part, into the EFA National Youth Development program.

Narrogin Cathair Donal Merino Stud CIC

 26th & 27th April 2008

For many years Narrogin been associated with eventing and the last weekend in April again attracted over 200 competitors from around Western Australia for the State’s first International event for 2008.

Cathair Donal Merino Stud were naming rights sponsors of this event in addition to the Master Series sponsorship provided by Healthway Go for 2 & 5 and funding from the Department of  Sport and Recreation and EFA International Competition Development Fund. Thanks also to the many businesses whose generous sponsorship or support ensured the event was such a success.

The Narrogin Equestrian Association Committee is to be commended for providing a top quality international cross country course, designed and built by Phil Bailey, and featuring some imaginative and challenging questions for all grades. Phil Bailey has been progressively developing the course to meet the ever changing standards and improve it from year to year.  The course was once again beautifully presented and the organization ran extremely smoothly.

President of the International Ground Jury, Joan Matheson from New Zealand, and Perth based Pollyann Huntington judged the CIC dressage classes which were held on the lovely turf in the middle of the Narrogin Racecourse. Show jumping course designer Fred Freeman built excellent and very challenging jumping courses which, throughout the day, proved they had to be ridden well. The event was delighted to have the very experienced and locally based Geoff McGuire to judge the jumping phase for all grades.

The Introductory classes were well attended with Cindy Lyall winning the Shire of  Narrogin Introductory 2 and Elizabeth Moore winning the Allstock Feed Junior Intro 2 class. In the Welldon Beef Senior Introductory 1 class Julie Broad and Tina Holmes both finished on their dressage score of 42.0 with Julie and Just Dandy taking 1st place on count back to XC timing.   The Ballard Stock Feed Junior Intro 1 winner was Shenae Lowings and Balaling Sonnet.

The Nagmart Senior Preliminary class was won by local rider Joy Gray and Deltry Invader in a very large field finishing on a score of 44.8 and the Virbac Junior Prelim winner was Katelyn Prendiville finishing on her dressage score of 45.6 riding Kemill Hill Sudden Storm. Joy Gray also took out the A&B Stock ‘N’ Feeds “Best Local Rider” from Bree Mustchin on Neptune Lad who won the Europa Saddlery Junior Pre Novice – once again dressage score being the deciding factor for this award.

The Rowville Horse Trailers Senior Pre Novice, kindly sponsored by Michael Dagostino, saw Kate Ingham lead the field on her dressage score riding Asti Oddyssey and in a strong field in the Europa Saddlery Junior Pre Novice it was a well deserved win for local rider, Bree Mustchin and Neptune Lad finishing on their dressage score of 47.4.

The FEI classes ran very smoothly, with the cross country courses proving to be tough but jumpable and the time being hard to beat in the wet conditions. The competition was very close in the CIC One Star, kindly sponsored by Equine Dental Improvements, with the jumping score playing an important part in final placings.  Emma King and Kirby Park Irish Mist were the winners with just one rail ahead of leading junior rider, Elizabeth Moore and Sebastian Bach.  Kirsten Twining and Aya Soquili were a close third with young riders Shinayd Trotman on Holy Bruce and Jessica Manson on Legal Star taking places in this class.  In the Caltex Star Shop Williams CIC Two Star class,  Renae Williams and Montego Bay won, with Michael Dagostino and Kendlestone Park Golden taking second place and Belinda Isbister and Justamint a close third.

Laurelle Hayes won the Makit Hardware CIC Three Star on her lovely chestnut, Fireplay, gaining a CIC*** qualifying run.

Huge thanks go to the sponsors, the volunteers and in particular Kim and Jody McKenzie, Jacqui Early, Roxie Taylor and the Narrogin Equestrian Association committee who worked so hard to pull together another fantastic event.

DRESSAGE JUDGES TASKFORCE

Hi All

In 2006 a National Rider Survey was undertaken. As a result of the comments received most states put in strategies to address the riders concerns. The ADC and NDJC have decided to conduct the same survey again this year and this was foreshadowed in the summary of the ADC meeting held in February 2008. The survey questions are the same as they were in 2006 so that we can compare the results and assess whether or not the strategies that were put in place have been effective.

Completed questionnaires are to be returned to me no later than 30 May 2008. I will collate the responses and send them out to each state for their information.

PLEASE NOTE: Jan Godwin ( B panel) has taken LOA from judging for the time being due to family commitments.

Toyota Paralympic Talent Search Program  24th May 2008

What is the Toyota Paralympic Talent Search Program?

The Toyota Paralympic Talent Search Program is an initiative of the Australian Paralympic Committee (APC). Its main goal is to identify people with physical disabilities and vision impairments who display the athletic potential to one day make it to Paralympic level competition. A secondary goal is to help introduce people with disabilities to enter into regular sport and physical activities.

Who is eligible to participate?

The Paralympic Talent Search day is only open to people with disabilities which would enable them to participate in events currently on the Paralympic Games schedule. This includes but is not limited to amputees, people with cerebral palsy, limb deficiencies, people in wheelchairs and people who are blind or have vision impairments.

People with intellectual disabilities are not currently on the Paralympic Games schedule. Therefore the APC is not able to endorse the participation of athletes with an intellectual disability in the Talent Search Program unless they also have another disability which would enable them to be classified for Paralympic competition.

All age groups are welcome to participate in the program however it is difficult to provide specific pathway advice to younger participants.

What sports can I do?

On the day we conduct general sport tests and activities, plus some sport specific tests for the sports where we offer a Paralympic Preparation Program (PPP). Sports that currently offer a PPP are: Archery, Athletics, Boccia, Cycling, Equestrian, CP Soccer, Goalball, Judo, Powerlifting, Rowing, Sailing, Shooting, Swimming, Table Tennis, Wheelchair Basketball, Wheelchair Tennis and Wheelchair Rugby.

Participants are encouraged to take part in all activities. Sport specific testing is dependent on coach availability. Therefore we are unable to guarantee that sport specific testing in all PPP sports will be available at all Talent Search Days.

The APC will forward results from the Talent Search day to coaches from these sports for their information. If you require further information on any of these sports, please go to www.paralympic.org.au.

What do I need to do before the Talent Search day?

Participants are required to complete a registration form prior to attending the day. Registration forms are available from www.paralympic.org.au; rilana.ostheim@paralympic.org.au or phone 0418 443 481

Directions and final information will be provided to all registered participants one week prior to the day
