An important Notice from the Department of Sport and Recreation

ANZAC DAY & SPORTS EVENTS

Anzac Day is a significant day for Australians and is commemorated each year on 25 April.

The Anzac Day Act 1960 says that no sports event (as defined in the Act) shall commence before 1.00pm on Anzac Day if an entry fee is charged to see the event. If an entry fee is charged, then 60% of the net proceeds are required to be paid to the Anzac Day Trust within 30 days. Penalties apply if payment is not made.

The Act allows community or club level sporting events (eg junior football, hockey, netball etc) to commence before 1.00pm on Anzac Day provided people are not asked to pay to watch the event, or donations of any kind are sought by the organisers. In these circumstances, sporting organisations should commemorate Anzac Day in some way as a mark of respect.

Exerpt from the Anzac Day Act (1960)

6. Sports on Anzac Day

(1) Notwithstanding anything in any Act or in any regulation, local law or by-law, no sports shall be held on Anzac Day in any year except in compliance with the provisions of this section.

(2) No race, match, game, exercise, pastime, contest or other event at any sports held on Anzac Day shall commence before the hour of 1 p.m.

(3) Nothing in this section shall affect the operation of any Act or law relating to Sunday, but otherwise this section shall have effect notwithstanding anything in any Act, regulation, local law or by-law.

(4) If any sports are held on Anzac Day in any year in contravention of this section, the person, club, association or body by or on behalf of whom or which those sports were so held, and each member of the managing body or committee of that club, association or body, commits an offence and is liable to a penalty not exceeding $400.

[Section 6 amended by No. 113 of 1965 s. 8(1); No. 14 of 1996 s. 4.]

ATTENTION - All EFAWA Committee Members, Affiliated Club Committee Members, Committee members of PCAWA, and Adult Riding Clubs Committee Members

The EFAWA will be hosting a Committee Management Workshop on Tuesday 29th April 2008 at 6.00pm, to be held in the Ocean Foam Room at the SEC. This workshop will be facilitated by Mr Bob Welch, former Executive Officer of the Sports Federation of WA, currently running the National Titles of Surf Lifesaving.   Mr Welch has a wealth of knowledge in the area of committee management.

It is strongly recommended that as many people as possible attend this workshop, as it can only serve to enhance your experience of serving on a Committee.  I would urge all of you to pass this on to any committee members who you know do not have email addresses, or members of all Promotions Committees.

There is no charge for the workshop, and light refreshments will be available on the night.  Please register through the EFAWA office for attendance at the workshop.
