PARA-EQUESTRIAN NEWS
Last Friday the Para Equestrian Selection Trials for 2008 Paralympics were held at Brookleigh Equestrian Estate.
Due to the EI outbreak, the International Qualifier which was initially to be held in Victoria, in October, was cancelled. As a compromise, two FEI Para Equestrian judges and the Chairman of Selectors are being flown to WA, New South Wales and Victoria.
As one of the judges, Sue Bright is also a Selector we were able to have 3 selectors – Pauline Perry [Tas. and Chairman], Sue Bright [Qld] and Val Mayger [WA] . In NSW there were two Selectors present and in Victoria four will view the trials. Naturally, the National Coach, Mary Longden, also has considerable input into the deliberations. Eleven Australian riders have qualified for selection and will be assessed by the judges and selectors. Videos of all tests and the judges’ sheets will be sent to each of the selectors and following a teleconference their recommendations will be made to the Australian Paralympic Committee.
The Western Australian Selection Trials proved to be a great success. Three qualified riders rode – Sharon Jarvis riding Odorado and Northern Griffin and Mary Ipkendanz riding Millendon Delight. Jan Pike, who medaled at Sydney and Athens, flew from New South Wales to also ride Northern Griffin in Grade 1A.[This grade is for the most severely disabled riders and under PE rules, two riders can ride the same horse but not in the same grade]. Jan and Sharon are delighted that Terrina Fairbrother has made Northern Griffin available to them to ride. Two other Para Equestrian riders also rode, at the request of the National Coach. They were Fleur Litster on Edlen Silver Sails, well known in the Show Horse world as a very successful show hunter and Aimee Blakestone on a wonderful show jumper owned Nellandra Henry. It is hoped that these riders will have the chance to compete overseas in the future.
The riders and the RDAWA Dressage Committee would like to thank all those members of the EFAWA and the RDAWA who came to support the riders. We had approximately 40 enthusiastic spectators and this really added a sense of occasion to the whole event.
We would also like to thank Nikki Brooks and all at Brookleigh. They could not do enough to make the day the success it was. The Judges and the Selectors enjoyed a beautiful dinner at Stewart’s on Thursday night and on Friday, as the visitors were flying out in the afternoon to Selection Trials in NSW, Nikki organized lunch at Stewart’s, before they left. A number of the spectators took the opportunity to have a good day out and also lunched at Stewart’s.
Thank you once again to everyone who supported our Para Equestrian riders.
Watch this space for breaking news on the final selections for Hong Kong.
