EFAWA Newsletter 17th January 2008

Hello Everyone
Well what a weekend that was. I really do live in heaven! Jumping on Saturday, from the very small and obviously new at the sport, to some of WA’s very best horse and rider combinations later in the day. It all seemed to run very smoothly considering the record number of entries that seemed to be lined up waiting their turn. Dressage was also a great day on Sunday, and for the first time outside of Adult Riding Club, I managed to dust off the old boy and have a go myself. It was a great experience and one I hope to repeat before the end of the series.
I suppose that there was one small disappointment on that day, and that was the lack of volunteers. Jess Blackwell and her stalwart group of individuals, did a magnificent job, given how short handed they were. I donned a green vollies t-shirt myself in the afternoon, and set out to do some gear checking. Another brand new experience for me. I am extremely pleased to say, that despite the heat, the competitors were all very pleasant. Ironically, I checked gear for a competitor who had done the morning stint, and had gear checked me. Not to mention being able to get up close and personal with some of the most gorgeous four legged creatures on earth. Sadly though, after four and a half hours in the hot sun, the novelty wore off somewhat and by 7.30pm when I had checked my last piece of equipment, I was truly exhausted. Only to find out that there was a girl up the other end of the field, who had been doing the job all day! Hats off to her, she deserves a medal. If it wasn’t for Mrs Blackwell, coming out very regularly with drinks, I think a couple of us may have succumbed to that heat.
It would seem an awful shame to have to impose a helpers fee, when there are so many people out and about on the day, who could give one or two hours of their day. A very small amount of time which goes by quickly. For instance a gear checker for every arena, and depending on the size of the classes in that particular arena, we could have volunteers rotating through, only requiring to put in an hour each. Runners for each couple of arenas, would keep the tests going up to the scorers more quickly, thus getting them back out on the boards quicker for you to see the results. Mind you, this was the nerve centre last week, and without some more desperately needed scorers, those poor ladies can not work too much faster. Training for any of these tasks will be cheerfully provided.
So please riders, Mums, Dads, family and friends, try to give the organiser a little bit of your time, so that we can make this event even better! If every rider could provide a volunteer for a couple of hours, we could have a roster system, which would not involve every helper, every week. You may only be needed once or twice for the whole series. What a wonderful thought, and imagine just how well the event would run. Jess is contactable via the EFAWA office, or her mobile number is on the program. Please consider giving her a call and offering some time. There is a job that suits everyone, so please don’t feel that you have nothing to offer.
If we still don’t get enough helpers this coming weekend, having consulted with Jess and her dedicated team, we will need to start imposing a helpers fee for Weeks 3 and 4. So let’s all rally and not let this happen. Good luck for the rest of the series.
